Description
Crispy on the outside and soft and cheesy inside, these traditional Greek tyrokroketes are irresistible fried cheese balls perfect as an appetizer or snack.
Ingredients
- 200g (7 oz) feta cheese
- 150g (5 oz) graviera or mozzarella, grated
- 1 large egg
- 2–3 tbsp flour or breadcrumbs
- 1 cup (100g) breadcrumbs
- ½ cup (60g) flour
- 2 eggs (for coating)
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Crumble the feta and grate the melting cheese, then place them together in a large bowl and mix gently until evenly combined.
- Mix in one egg thoroughly until the mixture becomes slightly sticky and holds together.
- Add flour or breadcrumbs gradually, mixing until the texture is soft but firm enough to shape.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up and make shaping easier.
- Scoop small portions and roll into compact, smooth balls using your hands.
- Prepare three bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs for coating.
- Roll each ball in flour, dip into egg, and coat with breadcrumbs. Repeat for a thicker crust if desired.
- Heat oil to 175°C (350°F), ensuring it is hot but not smoking.
- Fry the cheese balls in small batches for 2–3 minutes, turning gently until golden brown.
- Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add chopped herbs like parsley or dill to the cheese mixture.
- Chilling is essential to prevent the balls from breaking while frying.
- Double-coating in breadcrumbs creates a crunchier crust.
- Serve with tzatziki or a squeeze of lemon for freshness.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat in an oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
