Description

These flaky apple turnovers are filled with warmly spiced Granny Smith apples and topped with a sweet vanilla-style glaze. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy afternoon treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • Juice of 1 small lemon
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons apple pie spice
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Peel and slice the apples into small pieces and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, butter, brown sugar, and apple pie spice. Cook for about 5 minutes until the apples soften and the sugar mixture becomes smooth.
  3. Mix the cornstarch with a small amount of water and stir into the apple mixture. Cook for 1 minute until thickened, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Unfold the puff pastry sheets and trim if needed to create even squares. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares for a total of 8 squares.
  5. Spoon about 3 tablespoons of apple filling onto one half of each pastry square, leaving space around the edges.
  6. Fold each square diagonally into a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal. Crimp with a fork if desired. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Whisk together the egg white and 1 teaspoon water to make an egg wash. Brush over the tops of the turnovers.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and cool completely.
  9. To make the glaze, stir together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Adjust consistency if needed.
  10. Drizzle glaze over cooled turnovers and serve.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the glaze.
  • Honeycrisp or Fuji apples can be substituted for Granny Smith apples.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
