Description
These flaky apple turnovers are filled with warmly spiced Granny Smith apples and topped with a sweet vanilla-style glaze. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy afternoon treat.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry
- 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- Juice of 1 small lemon
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons apple pie spice
- 1 egg white
- 1 teaspoon water
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Peel and slice the apples into small pieces and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, butter, brown sugar, and apple pie spice. Cook for about 5 minutes until the apples soften and the sugar mixture becomes smooth.
- Mix the cornstarch with a small amount of water and stir into the apple mixture. Cook for 1 minute until thickened, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Unfold the puff pastry sheets and trim if needed to create even squares. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares for a total of 8 squares.
- Spoon about 3 tablespoons of apple filling onto one half of each pastry square, leaving space around the edges.
- Fold each square diagonally into a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal. Crimp with a fork if desired. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Whisk together the egg white and 1 teaspoon water to make an egg wash. Brush over the tops of the turnovers.
- Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and cool completely.
- To make the glaze, stir together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Adjust consistency if needed.
- Drizzle glaze over cooled turnovers and serve.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the glaze.
- Honeycrisp or Fuji apples can be substituted for Granny Smith apples.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
