Description
These crispy cream cheese wontons are golden brown on the outside with a rich, creamy filling inside. Serve them with sweet and sour sauce for a classic takeout-style appetizer at home.
Ingredients
- 1/2 package wonton wrappers
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 egg white, whipped
- Oil for frying
- 1/2 cup homemade sweet and sour sauce
- 1 cup fresh crabmeat (optional)
- Green onions, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Place about 1 heaping teaspoon of cream cheese in the center of each wonton wrapper. If using crabmeat, mix it with the cream cheese before filling the wrappers.
- Brush the edges of each wrapper with whipped egg white or water. Fold and pinch the edges tightly to seal.
- Heat oil to 350℉ in a deep pan or fryer. Fry the wontons in batches until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm with sweet and sour sauce. Add chili paste to the sauce if desired for extra spice. Garnish with green onions if desired.
Notes
- Do not overcrowd the fryer to keep the wontons crispy.
- Crabmeat adds extra flavor but can be omitted for a classic cream cheese version.
- Wontons are best served immediately after frying.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat in the oven or air fryer.
