Description
This classic grilled cheese sandwich is perfectly crispy on the outside with a rich, melty blend of cheddar and Gruyère inside. A quick and comforting meal made in minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 thick slices good quality bread
- 1 to 2 tablespoons softened butter or mayonnaise
- 2 slices medium or sharp cheddar cheese (about 2 oz)
- 1 oz (1/2 cup) shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Spread a thin, even layer of butter or mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice, covering all the way to the edges.
- Preheat a non-stick skillet or cast iron pan over medium heat. Place one slice of bread in the skillet, buttered side down.
- Layer the cheddar slices evenly over the bread, then sprinkle the shredded Gruyère on top.
- Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
- Cook for 3–4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy, then carefully flip.
- Cook the other side for another 3–4 minutes until golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- Remove from the skillet, let rest briefly, then cut in half and serve warm.
Notes
- Use mayonnaise instead of butter for an extra crispy crust.
- Cook on medium heat to ensure the bread toasts without burning before the cheese melts.
- Try adding extras like tomato slices or bacon for variation.
- Best served immediately for optimal texture and flavor.
