Description
A classic Oklahoma onion burger featuring juicy smashed beef patties cooked with sweet caramelized onions and served on toasted buns. Simple, savory, and packed with bold flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 4 teaspoons avocado oil
- 1 large sweet onion, peeled and very thinly sliced
- 4 hamburger buns
- Coarse salt, to taste
- Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
- Optional: pickle slices
- Optional: American cheese slices
- Optional: yellow mustard
Instructions
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal-sized balls.
- Heat 1 teaspoon avocado oil per burger in a large cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Place the beef balls on the hot surface, spacing them 3–4 inches apart. Using parchment paper and a spatula or press, smash each ball to about 1/4–1/2 inch thick.
- Season with salt and pepper, then top each patty with a generous amount of sliced onions, spreading them evenly. Lightly season the onions with salt.
- Cook for about 90 seconds until browned, then flip and cook another 90 seconds until the onions are caramelized and the burger is cooked through.
- After flipping, stack the top and bottom buns on the burger to steam for 20–30 seconds, then remove and toast them in the pan.
- Transfer the burger to the bottom bun, add optional cheese, pickles, and mustard if desired, then top with the other bun and serve.
Notes
- Use very thinly sliced onions for proper caramelization.
- Cast iron or a flat griddle gives the best crust.
- Add cheese immediately after flipping for a melted finish.
- Buns can be buttered before toasting for extra flavor.
- Double up patties for a heartier burger.
